anibee Cosplayer Focus: Yivon!
Cosplayers come from all walks of life and of all age groups. Today, we get to talk to one of the younger, but also one of the most impressive, cosplayers in the scene!
Cute & charming, but packing a lot of personality to boot, it's Yivon!
anibee: Hi Yivon! First thing's first, how long have you been cosplaying for, and how did you first start out?
Yivon: Hello 8 ) ! I've been cosplaying for almost 3 years now. It all started out when I was looking up on local online forums and I stumbled upon a thread regarding cosplay. I read up a lot about it, and finally decided to try it out too. The rest was history!
anibee: What's the main determining factor for you in choosing a character to cosplay as: personal liking, or general popularity?
Yivon: I like to choose characters that suit my petite physique, as well as characters with outspoken personalities, although there are some exceptions of course. Some of my favourites have been characters like Yui (from K-ON!) with her bubbly & ditzy behaviour, the elegantly evil Rachel Alucard (from Blazblue) and Annie (from League of Legends) with her wonderful nastiness!
anibee: Your general focus appears to be on "cutesy"-type, youthful characters. Do you sometimes feel limited by this, or is it something you see as an advantage?
Yivon: Honestly speaking, I often do feel very limited by that. There are many characters that I really like, but I just can't cosplay them because of my looks. Nonetheless, I'll still embrace my height and looks and try to do characters that take full advantage of my positive traits - and that's the key to enjoying the hobby!
anibee: As a younger cosplayer, how do you juggle your real life responsibilities (like school, income, time), with your hobby?
Yivon: As cosplay is a very expensive hobby, I started to learn how to save up, as well as to manage my time. I even have a piggy bank dedicated to my cosplay funds :D!
anibee: A big and often too well known problem with younger cosplayers - parental approval (or lack thereof). Do you suffer from this problem as well, and what's your take on how common this obstacle is for many of your peers?
Yivon: Fortunately, my parents are very supportive of my cosplays. They believe that it's an excellent platform for me to expand my social circle, as well as to have a look at how society works. I think that youths facing this problem can try talking to their parents about it and allow them to understand your interest and why you are doing this. Sometimes all it takes is a good, level-headed discussion to clear things up!
anibee: What advice do you have for cosplayers who want to achieve what you have?
Yivon: I won't consider myself super popular or famous or anything... But just have fun and enjoy what you are doing!
A charming, energetic young cosplayer with lots of potential - and parental support! We'll be keeping an eye on her future projects, that's for sure!
