anibee Cosplayer Focus: Yuanie!
When it comes to pop culture, 4 main things come to mind: Anime, Manga, Video Games, and Cosplay.
It's common to see someone who blends a few of these together, but how about ALL? That's right, our next cosplayer that we've gotten a chance to chat with is BOTH and a long-time gamer and a of course, an experienced cosplayer!
Presenting - Yuanie!
anibee: The standard first question! How long have you been cosplaying and how did you first get into the hobby?
Yuanie: It started all the way back from 2001, when a friend invited me into a mini cosplay group. It was through there that I got to know more about cosplay and how special this hobby was. I thought about how cool it was to dress up as your favourite japan anime/manga/video game characters! I love making props too, and that's what that made me get fully into cosplay!
anibee: What is cosplay to you personally?
Yuanie: Cosplay lets me become a character that is totally different from my usual self. From the physical appearance, the feel and the behaviour, the challenge of posing like the character during photoshoots, drafting & sewing the costumes and making the props are always exciting and fun things to me. Not to mention, it's also a good break from the usual boring working life!
anibee: We've noticed you love to do a lot of video game characters! What do you look at when deciding on what character to do (e.g. do you pick a character due to popularity vs. your liking of him, do you need to beat the game first etc.)?
Yuanie: The main reason I cosplay most of my characters, is simply that I'm a huge fan of their said-games! I've been a gamer since young thanks to my brother introducing to me to tons of games. After going through hours and hours of a game, I usually develop a great deal of love and care for the character I play as, which then gives me the inspiration to cosplay as him or her. Occasionally, I would choose characters that catch my eye at first sight, but I always follow that up with a lot of research prior to making a final decision whether or not to cosplay him/her.
anibee: Being a gamer and being a game-character cosplayer - how do you manage being both, or is there even a difference?
Yuanie: Haha I don't think that there's any difference. Playing a game helps me in my portrayal of a character and likewise, cosplaying a character increases my enthusiasm for a game!
anibee: There are literally thousands of possible game characters one can cosplay as! Is there one cosplay that is extra special to you?
Yuanie: Yes! Link from The Legend of Zelda! He's one character that I'll gladly cosplay anytime, again and again! I've been a big fan, having played the games in the series from the very first installment. It was really my attraction to Wind Waker's cute graphics that got me started on my first Link cosplay.
anibee: There are many people out there who are passionate gamers that love their characters, but don't always have the courage to cosplay them like you do. What advice do you have for them?
Yuanie: Cosplay a character that you truly like and want to bring to life and you will never go wrong! Now that cosplay is so popular worldwide, you can easily search for tutorials for tips on how to work on props and costumes. You just need the courage to make that first step, and see for yourself why so many of us love this special hobby! ; )
