World's first AKB48 cafe is pretty in plaid

Attacked by a serious case of the munchies last Friday, the anibee.tv team decided to escape to the three-month old AKB48 Singapore Cafe for some noms.

Our crew were ushered into the classic-looking cafe adorned in plaid chic decor by its pretty staff with gravity-defying eyelashes. What lined the wall? Framed pictures of the AKB48 girls, of course.

Never mind that the menu had rather limited choices (a full menu of over 70 items, we hear, is on the way). We were happy to sink our teeth into ham and egg sandwiches, carbonara and Tonkatsu rice. Yummy!

K-Pop might be all the rage now, but J-pop is making its presence felt. Everyone knows AKB48; they are Japan's top idol girl group sensation. Singapore fans are really a lucky bunch since this is AKB48's first ever cafe in the world. Plus, Singapore is also AKB48's first overseas base.

Of course, what would AKB48 be without the theater performances it is so famous for? Up to four concerts have been promised to be held on a monthly basis on a regular basis with AKB48 members as well as members from SKE48, NMB48 and SDN48 joining in too. The next theater performance will be held at *SCAPE Warehouse on October 8.

Located at youth hangout space *SCAPE Orchard, the AKB48 cafe and official store counts the 987FM radio studio and K Box among its neighbours at *SCAPE. So why *SCAPE, which is a little out of the way from Orchard's main shopping area? A quick chat with SOZO's design director Jim Khor (SOZO is AKB48's managing agent in Singapore) settled all that. He gave us two good reasons for the venue: its niche appeal and its existing student crowds. Thumbs up!
